Cats and dogs may only be imported to Australia from approved countries. Conditions for importing cats and dogs from approved countries vary depending on the country of export.

Under the legislation of the Australian Customs Service (ACS) dogs of the following breeds are not eligible for importation into Australia. The ACS can be contacted on 61 2 6245 5484 or 1300 363 263

• dogo Argentino
• fila Brazileiro
• Japanese tosa
• Pit bull terrier or American pit bull

Under the legislation of Environment Australia domestic/non-domestic animal hybrids eg bengal cats or wolf crosses are not eligible for import, unless they are proven to be 5th generation or more away from any pure-bred non-domestic ancestor. Category 1: New Zealand: No quarantine in Australia

Category 2: 30 days quarantine in Australia

Bahrain, Barbados, Cyprus, Falkland Islands, Fiji, French Polynesia (includes Tahiti, Society Islands, Marquesas Islands, Austral Islands, Tuamotu Islands, Gambier Islands), Guam, Hawaii, the Republic of Ireland, Japan, Malta, Mauritius, New Caledonia, Norway, Singapore, Sweden, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, Vanuatu.

Category 3A: 60 days quarantine in Australia

American Samoa, Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Wallis and Futuna, Western Samoa.

Category 3B: 60 days quarantine in Australia

Christmas Island, Cook Islands, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Kingdom of Tonga,Tuvalu.

Category 4: Minimum 30 days quarantine in Australia
